This entry-level position is within our production group. The work includes following standard operating procedures for using automated liquid handling stations, interfacing with our in-house database, providing support in various lab functions, and interacting with our bioinformatics department.

Education Requirements

This position requires the ability to frequently and repetitively move and/or pour a minimum of 5lbs (up to 25lbs may occasionally be required) as well as other physical activities, including:

  • Constantly opening and closing lab receptacles, including removing and adhering plate seals, twisting caps, lifting lids.
  • Occasionally ascending/descending a ladder to retrieve lab supplies.
  • Constantly positioning self to pour or pipette reagents used for the lab process, including large and small volumes.

This is a mid-level position within our protein group. The ideal candidate will be responsible for purification and characterization of a variety of protein types including therapeutic proteins, antigens and assay reagents expressed in mammalian, bacterial and yeast hosts. They will not be satisfied with just doing their part but being part of a collaborative team that aims to continually improve. They will demonstrate a sense of urgency with contagious optimism and a “can do attitude”. Proteins will be purified at various scales ranging from high throughput robotic purification to many grams using standard chromatographic techniques. The incumbent will be expected to provide intellectual input on projects, assist in overcoming process bottles necks and designing processes for optimal yields and product quality.

Requirements

Qualities:

  • In-dept knowledge of purification operations and equipment.
  • Expert level of GE AKTA FPLC protein chromatography with the ability to write chromatography methods in Unicorn Software for automated runs.
  • Experience with different modes of chromatography including affinity, ion-exchange, size exclusion, hydrophobic interaction and reverse phase.
  • Proficient in purification of recombinant proteins from multiple expression systems (Mammalian, E.coli, & Pichia).
  • Experience in TFF (ultra-filtration, diafiltration) and depth filtration.
  • Good Communicator - capable of discussing questions, concerns without hesitation throughout the company. Communicates clearly with everyone in the cell culture, purification, analytical groups and with project managers.
  • Strong focus on attention to detail and quality.
  • Multi-tasker –working in two areas requires the ability to juggle the needs for multiple groups and have the ability to prioritize to achieve goals with effective time management/organizational skills.
  • Good record keeper in addition to being able to work with LIMS.
  • Flexible – it will be rare that any day will be the same.

Duties:

  • Purify and characterize proteins from eukaryotic and prokaryotic expression systems.
  • Apply purification knowledge and expertise to solve complex technical problems; may apply novel approach that provides significant technology advancement. Participate in the purification of recombinant proteins that do not fit platform-based processes.
  • Streamline and automate current processes that are not platform based.
  • Active participation/lead technical projects with customers and vendors.
  • Makes contributions to scientific literature and conferences through publications and presentations.
  • Mentors and provides technical advice to individuals within the team. Significant contributor to multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Perform in process QC including but not limited to SDS page, HPLC-SEC, as necessary.

Educational Requirements

A PhD degree in Biological Sciences/Biological Engineering or related field with 0-2 years of experience.

The ideal candidate should have a Ph.D in biochemistry, analytical chemistry or another relevant discipline with 0-2 years of working experience. This experience should include exposure to analytical methods and prior experience working with proteins in an analytical setting. They will have an organized and systematic approach to technical challenges, as well as a track record of collaborative relations with groups such as research & development, analytical development, and protein production operations.
